• Gatehouse School children start their dark ages project

    A bright frosty morning greeted pupils from the Primary 5/6 class as they made their way to Trusty's Hill on Monday 4th November accompanied by their teacher, National Scenic Area officer Anna Johnson, writer Liz Niven and ceramicist Andrew Adair. 

  • Trusty's Hill Interim Report

    During the summer volunteers from Gatehouse assisted with an excavation on Trusty’s Hill just outside Gatehouse. Many more took advantage of the daily guided tours of the site.  An interim report has been published and is available for download here.

There are two burial sites at Cairnholy dating from Neolithic times, both very well preserved and commanding fine views over Wigtown Bay.  Cairnholy I is notable for the impressive facade, in front of which, archaeological evidence suggests, ceremonies took place.  More.  

The River Fleet

The River Fleet
There are pretty walks alongside the Fleet as it meanders down through the valley.  Bankside trees shade many favoured fishing pools. More.
