Gatehouse receives biosphere recognition

New signs have been erected at the entrances to Gatehouse declaring that we are a Biosphere community.

Gatehouse of Fleet is a proud supporter of the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere.  A Biosphere is a special designation awarded by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to areas renowned for their special environments which are valued by local people.

Fundraising talk at Kirkandrews Kirk

Kirkcudbright is well known as the artists' town but over the last 150 years artists have painted across the Stewartry.  On Thursday 16th March, David Steel will be giving an illustrated talk entitled "Borgue in Scottish Art."  David will tell the story of the many artists, some famous, some less well known who have chosen the parish of Borgue as the subject for a wide variety of paintings.

Gatehouse at heart of Dark Age kingdom of Rheged

Archaeologists Ronan Toolis and Christopher Bowles were in Gatehouse on Saturday 21st January to launch their new book The Lost Dark Age Kingdom of Rheged.  This major publication based  on the excavation led here in Gatehouse by Ronan and Chris in 2012, places Trusty's hill at the centre of a lost dark age kingdom.

Help Wanted

Council cutbacks mean that there will be much less input from Dumfries & Galloway Council for planting schemes next year. One area of Gatehouse that will be particularly adversely affected is the Town Hall garden.

Funding Award for Fun Outdoors

Fun Outdoors have received £721 funding from the Stewartry Area Committee for their project "Fun, Outdoor, Cooperation and Equality". This project will get children outdoors regularly to learn about cooperation, equality, children's rights, and peace.  The overall aims are to improve children's outdoor skills, interpersonal skills, confidence and connection to the natural world, in order to provide the best start in life for all our children.

Woodside Garage

There is currently a petition in Spar and the Gatehouse Store regarding the state of the former Woodside Garage site. Gatehouse residents are still concerned about the poor state of the site and have asked local MP Richard Arkless to support a formal approach to Dumfries and Galloway Council to negotiate with the site owner to achieve improvements at this prominent site. If you feel that you wish to lend your support, please sign the petition as soon as possible.

Original Anwoth War Memorial to be rededicated

The original Anwoth War Memorial has now been restored and placed in Gatehouse Parish Church alongside the other memorials from Anwoth Church.  The memorial will be rededicated at the Armistice Sunday service on 13 November.
