Council cutbacks mean that there will be much less input from Dumfries & Galloway Council for planting schemes next year. One area of Gatehouse that will be particularly adversely affected is the Town Hall garden.
The existing roses are struggling due to the very poor condition of the soil, some of the box hedging has died, and the whole garden needs revitalising. DGC will not be able to provide us with assistance to undertake this work, although they may be able to give us some summer bedding plants. In the spring, therefore, we will need help from volunteers to prune the existing shrubs, dig over the flower beds and fertilise them, remove dead plants and divide and replant others. We also need contributions of shrubs to infill bare areas. If you can give us some plants, or take cuttings of hardy shrubs to donate next year, it would be very much appreciated. We have offers of manure for the soil (which has virtually no nutrition left in it) but any donations both for this garden and the planting troughs would be warmly welcomed. Look out for notices on the car park notice board in the Spring, giving dates for the volunteer working parties, and also dates when people can donate plants. We look forward to being inundated with volunteers! Gatehouse of Fleet Community Council
