European project gets under way

Gatehouse Development Initiative has teamed up with five other groups from across Europe to develop a project designed to bring together older people, younger people and the wider community to share knowledge and help protect the local environment. The project will see older members of the community passing on traditional skills to young people and the community undertaking landscape management projects.

As Local Authorities withdraw from providing services across Europe, volunteer groups must step in, if key features of the local landscape such as core paths or, here at Gatehouse, the town hall garden, for example, are to be maintained.

The project which is part of the Erasmus+ lifelong learning programme is entitledEcomanagement: yesterday’s knowledge, tomorrow’s know how. Along with the GDI the partners are:

  • Association Alpes de Lumière from the south of France

  • EuroKoncept 21 from Slovakia

  • Communauté de Communes Celavu Prunelli from Corsica

  • Red2Red Consultores, S.L from Spain

  • Perifereiaki Enosio Dimon Ipirou (PED Epirus) from North West Greece

The aims of the project are:

  • To transmit traditional intergenerational and pan European skills linked to the sustainable development of our European regions
  • To involve young people, especially those in difficulty in the project and, in the longer term, to make them ambassadors for landscape management alongside the local authorities
  • To train citizens from each partner area to play an important role in transferring skills to other citizens so that they become groups of trained European eco managers who will be guardians of the local rural heritage.
  • To transfer the fruits of the project to a wider public both within the area of each project partner but also at the wider European level, so that good practices may be shared as widely as possible.

The members of the Ecomanagement partnership will work together on five project themes, building on the experience of each other, each partner being responsible for one of the themes:

  • Creating examples of good practice in terms of listing rural skills and transferring them between the generations.
  • Working together to model best practice in training and awareness-raising on the basis of the examples provided.
  • Producing an ethnographic study of traditional know-how based on young people interviewing holders of traditional know-how.
  • Organising a practical training course for trainers so that they can pass on know-how to others and transfer the results of the practical training to the wider community.
  • Creating a web site which will display and communicate the results of the project in the languages of the partnership.
