Orchard project takes root

A project to create a community orchard in Gatehouse has moved ahead with the planting of 20 apple, pear cherry, plum and damson trees in Garries Park.

Thanks to the hard work of the Gatehouse Carbon Action project and the generosity of local groups and individuals over £400 was raised towards the purchase of fruit trees to be planted in Garries Park.  Jools Cox of the Orchard and Wild Harvest project kindly sourced the trees and brought spades, guards and ties.  It is hoped that in years to come these trees will be a source of local fruit for the people of Gatehouse.

A great turn out of some 25 people, many of them youngsters were shown how to plant and secure a fruit tree and took part in the planting.  The youngsters are looking forward now to planting more trees at Gatehouse school.

This was a good start to the Day of the Region programme of events in Gatehouse.
