Gatehouse 'The Cape'

A short route on the edge of Gatehouse for very young riders.

Start:  Centre of Gatehouse DG7 2HS

Distance: 1.3 miles.

Duration: 30 minutes with a balance bike or scooter

 

Alternative route to avoid High Street includes a short flight of steps.  The route is flat.

 

This ride takes a short trip on the edge of Gatehouse of Fleet village on quiet roads and surfaced track, suitable for families with young children on bikes, balance bikes, scooters and on foot. 

 

Miles Route

0 Cycle up the High Street. Continue up High Street and turn left into Church Street

Note the alternative route to avoid High Street.

Pass the Parish Church on the right.  Continue straight on into Castramont Road.

0.2 Turn right onto the tarmac track after the row of white rendered bungalows on the right.  Keep an eye out for Shetland ponies in the fields and robins and blackbirds in the hedges and scrub on either side of the track.

Continue to Laurieston Road.  The wet marshy area on the right attracts other birds; see how many you can see. 

0.4 Turn right onto Laurieston Road and continue to High Street and the War Memorial.  There is a footpath along the side of the road for small people on balance bikes or scooters.

0.8 The pond next to the War Memorial, once a mill pond for the local cotton mills, is home to swans, ducks and other birds who feel at home in the tangle of willow trees on the banks.

1.0 Turn right onto High Street proceed to Clock Tower and retrace route to the start.

 

Alternative route avoiding High Street.

0 From within the grounds of the Mill on the Fleet leave by the steps at the top end of the site on to Catherine Street. Continue along Catherine Street to Castramont Road.

0.2 Turn left onto Castramont Road and continue on main route above to Horatio Square opposite the Clock Tower.

1.0 Turn right onto Church Street and after 75 yards turn left onto Catherine Street and retrace route back to the Mill.
