Food Train is a social enterprise providing vital support services to enable older people to live independently at home for as long as possible. In addition to providing a vital grocery delivery service The Food Train is establishing a new befriending service in the Strewartry.
We offer the following befriending services:
- telephone calls
- home visits
- group outings.
Volunteer befrienders provide informal support services for which members pay a small fee. Befriending takes place on a regular basis, so customers can rely on companionship, a friendly face and someone to talk to.
We are looking for customers in Gatehouse who are over 65 and could do with some company!
If anyone is interested in becoming a volunteer befriender please do also get in touch with us!

Food Train began in Dumfries in 1995 following a community survey of older people that found many of them struggling with their weekly grocery shopping; an idea was developed to ease this burden on older people. A partnership of local shops and volunteers formed and Food Train began making deliveries of fresh groceries to older people in need with the help of local volunteers and shops.
